Open Lecture Series X Vol. 3: Crisis of Democracy

1. April 2019 @ 19:00 - 22:00

Open Lecture Series X (OLSX) is a distinctive, international and open event series tapping on relevant economic, social and environmental issues. We are inviting an accomplished speaker for each event, who will share her or his perspectives on pressing topics.

**** The Global Crisis of Democracy****
For more than a decade, the world has become less democratic every year. Worryingly, that decline has not been focused in one region but stretches across the entire globe. From the rise of authoritarian populists in Russia, Turkey, Venezuela, Brazil, and the Philippines to those who are chipping away at democratic institutions in the United States, Poland, and Hungary, the crisis is widespread. Worse, the international order that fosters the growth of democracy is cracking under the weight of attacks from the White House and from a splintered Europe consumed by Brexit. In this talk, Dr. Klaas will pinpoint the problem, explain why it is happening, and provide possible solutions for how those committed to democracy can help turn back the authoritarian tide — before it’s too late.

**** Brian Klaas ****
Dr. Brian Klaas is an Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Global Politics at University College London, Fellow at the London School of Economic and a columnist for The Washington Post. Klaas is also a frequent television commentator (e.g. CNN, BBC, CNBC, Sky News) and political consultant (e.g. EU, NATO).

Dr. Klaas is an expert on democracy, authoritarianism, US foreign policy, American politics more generally, political violence, and elections. He is the author of three books: „The Despot’s Apprentice: Donald Trump’s Attack on Democracy“ (Hurst & Co, November 2017); „The Despot’s Accomplice: How the West is Aiding & Abetting the Decline of Democracy,“ (Oxford University Press, December 2016) and „How to Rig an Election“ (Yale University Press, co-authored with Professor Nic Cheeseman; May 2018).
